DEEP SURFACE. A NEW EXHIBITION FEATURING ORNAMENT AND PATTERN DESIGN

I wish I could go! But really beautiful stuff.

I love this article by Denis Gonzales Crisp, because it gives not only a history of ornament, which explains why it was so UNFASHIONABLE back in the 90’s, and also for most of the early to mid 20th century (thanks modernism) and why it has made such a resurgence. It also explains why love of ornament is intrinsic to being human. We are actually wired to recognize pattern as part of our learning process. Despite this, it has historically been seen by stupid westerners as female, therefore, BAD!! typical.

anyway, its a really interesting read.. good pics too.

Ornament:

Why we need it (it’s in our nature)
How we see it (we read it)
How it works (six proposals, six themes)
