Teaching students to appreciate lettforms, strokewidth, and spacing can be challenging. But this way is awesome.

While Typography uses standardised letterforms, lettering is different. Lettering is an older art and consists of unique forms made with a variety of tools. Today the applications and potential of lettering and type are very broad, when designers create handmade letterforms and experimental Alphabets.
for more pictures and further reading on how this was done, read here:
Why Knowledge of Lettering as Art & Craft is Essential to Graphic Design Education
“Lettering is an Art & Craft. It requires skill in draughtsmanship, penmanship and inkmanship. It requires a sure knowledge of forms and style supported by solid technical experience in art and printing. This is what we spend our life in getting. This is what is sieved through into each piece of work.”

A Consideration of the study of letters as THINGS as well as symbols of things or of sounds of speech
If you follow this link you can download this beautiful visual PDF. It is an excerpt from the 1977 book called Letter-forms and lettering by John R Biggs. You cannot purchase this book any more so it is a really rare document.
Biggs starts off saying that: “Letters are things. They have length and breadth and sometimes depth. They make language visible. “
If this proves to be popular, I will share more of the book when he gives example of the features that make letters unique. (again great visual examples). He also provides some wonderful exercises to do that will help you to become better at the re emerging art of hand lettering!
Happy typographing!

KIT FOR UPTIGHT WHITE PEOPLE
ARTIFICAT # 6 - SOCIAL LURBRICANT
Upon coming to Australia in 2000 after attending a few work functions, Slava, a Moldovan friend, was shocked to discover how much alcohol Australians drink in social situations. “I don’t understand why they take wine, beer, and champagne, never with food!” he would say in his wonderful eastern european accent. He was also quick tonote the behavioural change in his workmates after they had taken a few drinks. Normally quiet and shy personalities became oddly friendly, affectionate and talkative. Then on Monday, the usual coldness and unfriendliness would return. This hot and cold behaviour was most unsettling to Slava.
what to do about it?
For those who are Socially Uptight
The Daggy music experiment.
Go to I-tunes, or a music store. Buy some yodelling music. Now, play it as loudly as possible, singing along with great gusto and attempting to dance. (This part is best done in company). Try to do this as badly as you can. How do you feel? After five minutes, you will start to feel every care and worry in the world escape you. With this sense of lightness will come a greater sense of confidence, and perspective. You will find that you care less about social rejection. “It’s obvious that the mirth filled man, the cheerful soul, the childish adult is the one who has least to fear from life.” Tom Hodgkinson The Freedom Manifesto.
This is object number 6 of 9 from the book I wrote called “The What the Hell Is Your Problem?” Kit. A Kit For Uptight White People. The Kit was my final masters project in Cross Disciplinary Design at COFA UNSW.
You can view it here: http://issuu.com/veronicagrow/docs/kitforuptightwhitepeople
If you live in Melbourne, it is stocked at Metropolis Books, Brunswick Bound and Brunswick Street Books for $16.
You can also purchase it here on Blurb http://www.blurb.com/my/book/detail/2597718
or email me.
Why do you think we seem to need alcohol to help us to be more open friendly and inclusive?
THEY’RE READY
I had to package them up in order to stop eating them. I felt so dreadful this morning after eating far too many last night. Merry Xmas to you all dear readers, may peace and love be with you always.
A Sweet Little Creek called the “Merri”
I live on the Merri Creek, and it is where I practise the Art of Walking every day. It is really a merry little creek, full of ducks, swans, geese, water hens, the odd rat, and many also where i pass some many merri doggy derringdooness out running so happy with sticks in their mouths.. The creek is arbored by lovely gum trees and willows, and some beautiful grasses, and also a magnificent old bluestone bridge that you pass underneath as you head north. I am so lucky to live on the Merri. If you want to find out more you can see pictures of it here: http://tumblr.com/ZPVFExAmpjP1
These are my personal merri creek xmas cards i have made this year which pertain to my personal space of the merri. They are my first foray into screen printing again after doing a screen printing course last year on FABRIC mind you.
There has to be an easier way though. You know the way things take 5 times longer than they should when you don’t know what you are doing:) first of all, I had to cut the stencils X 2 (1 for each of the 2 colours) when I kept having disasters with the stencil bleeding. I was using that plastic stuff called Mylar. The moral of the tale is this: If you want to print onto paper, Mylar = certain disaster.
Then the second issue was registration. It was near on impossible to align everything perfectly. Does ANYONE out there in reader land have any tips please oh please:)
And finally.. the clean up process has to take at least 6 times longer than the actual making.
Anyway, they do look cool, and I am going to make some sweet amaretti to give to people with them.. quite a lovely present to receive I think! I’m off to have a well earned ice-coffee and read some more fantastic Leanne Shapton (can’t get enough) Happy Xmas everyone…

DID YOU KNOW?
From numerous migrant perspectives, many of our “Anglo” social norms, are actually problematic?
Here is a copy of a kit, that explores these perspectives, and asks you whether you display these tendencies. The kit also provides explorations and solutions to help you overcome your uptight nature.
The Kit is illustrated and designed by me, and was my final project for my University of NSW Masters in Cross Disciplinary Design. I would love to hear from you if you are interested in finding out more about the kit.

Initially, I thought this was a kitschy book that presented privilege in a creative, clever, beautiful way. And it is (seemingly), but it is also a Masters project. Bloody brilliant!
