I WENT TO OLD SCHOOL AND …….
This is the official invitation to the opening of “Old School”. A wholly private alternative to mainstream very expensive sausage faction GD eduction (in Australia anyway)
I intend for all of the atendees to actually fill out one of the sheets as pictured, and then I will use the sheets to create a studio wall installation (but I havent told anyone yet, just you)
The reason for doing this is so that visitors can experience the transformative “Powr of Making”, that will help to enforce our message and philosophy through to our visitors. Making the whole experience interactive.

L is For Lettering
Lettering is alive and kicking at Old School, and we have been busy this week using it to inject some flavour into the workspace, to help us remember why we are here in this totally local and personal space, instead of in some institution.

While Typography uses standardised letterforms, lettering is different. Lettering is an older art and consists of unique forms made with a variety of tools. Today the applications and potential of lettering and type are very broad, when designers create handmade letterforms and experimental Alphabets.

for more pictures and further reading on how this was done, read here:

Why Knowledge of Lettering as Art & Craft is Essential to Graphic Design Education

“Lettering is an Art & Craft. It requires skill in draughtsmanship, penmanship and inkmanship. It requires a sure knowledge of forms and style supported by solid technical experience in art and printing. This is what we spend our life in getting. This is what is sieved through into each piece of work.”

Old School has Lift off!

First Week of Old School In Review

Old School is now open for business, and it has been a week of steep learning. Learning about Google analytics, the technical side of the school web page, and essentially spreading the word of what Old School is and our ethos is a big job. People seem to struggle to  think outside of the square which is normal. So they want accreditation (even though it is expensive and irrelevant).

This is the only private design education facility I know that is not about profit, and is actually about proper education. Other schools drum up business by churning out great quantities of work that look great, very style driven, with little original design thinking or ideas driving the work. Their ethos is “learn computer graphics fast” YUCK, SO YUCK. I really want to be successful with this venture of mine. Successful in creating a learning hub that is an inspiring and dynamic space in which to be.

On the the first day via  twitter, many people who contacted me. I hope that this converts into numbers.

Here is hour first post

An Excellent Typographic FREE Download - very rare. very beautiful

This is titled “A Consideration of the study of letters as THINGS as well as symbols of things or of sounds of speech”

If you follow this link you can download this beautiful visual PDF. It is an excerpt from the 1977 book called Letter-forms and lettering by John R Biggs. You cannot purchase this book any more so it is a really rare document.

Biggs starts off saying that: “Letters are things. They have length and breadth and sometimes depth. They make language visible. “

If this proves to be popular, I will share more of the book when he gives example of the features that make letters unique. (again great visual examples). He also provides some wonderful exercises to do that will help you to become better at the re emerging art of hand lettering!

Happy typographing! Let me know your thoughts, it really is pretty spectacular isn’t it?
