Tommy and His Pony
I was immediately seduced by the colour combination in the inside spread (first picture). But it is also the tone created by the narrative in both books that I really find so enchanting. Why don’t people speak like that any more?
ADOBE IDEAS
Is the app I like the most, it’s more straight forward than sketchbook. The first image though was done on Drawfree. Really good for recording those thoughts and impressions quickly.
IPAD APPS PROVE TO BE THERAPEUTIC
I knew David Hockney likes the I phone drawing Apps so this one was downloaded for an experiment. They are addictive because they give instant gratification! There is something nice and calming about sliding your finger over the glass as you watch TV and if you don’t like your results there are endless undoes.
PATTERN 2 & 3 & 4
2 & 3 Taken from book of Xmas wrapping paper given to me by Henry a man I dated in 2006 who worked for a paper company, and thought I might like the book. He was right. Despite this lovely gesture, the relationship never continued. 4 Is taken from a book of Art Deco Patterns purchased at Mary Martin’s Bookshop Adelaide back in 1990 for $9.99
SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION CONTINUES
So to continue the idea of six degrees of separation.. yes, ellen shapton led to bella, which led to Jenny Bowers. Jenny is from Brighton, and I have noticed in my ramblings on the web that alot of talent emerges from the southern part of UK, namely Brighton… Both Bella and Jenny are represented by waynepate.com so that is how i discovered jenny.
here is her site. http://www.jennybowers.co.uk/
FUNNY ISN’T IT HOW ONE THING ALWAYS LEADS TO ANOTHER
This is the work of Bella Foster (great name.. “Bella”). I discovered Bella via my new discovery Leanne Shapton. Then through Bella I have discovered Jenny Bowers. You will just have wait for Jenny, because we can only digest so much at a time. So don’t be greedy! Here is some work from “Bella”. Beautiful tumbly scribbly work, that looks so effortless to the untrained eye. But the trained eye can see the great skill it takes to make all those wonky lines look so “perfect”. Bella is from UK, and has been practising for roughly 10 years. That is all I can discover at this stage… enjoy the fresh and so beautiful work.
MY DESK 24.12.11
Am having a very nice time working with patterns. Its very relaxing and mindless work …
COLOURFUL PEOPLE DO HAVE COLOURFUL FRIENDS
Thankyou Amadis my friend for popping by to say Happy Xmas with your mum and dad who are down from the NSW Coast. I have known Amadis since long ago when we met in a choir of one of Amadis’ fellow students studying music composition with her at the Conservatorium of Music. I beat Amadis over the head with a stick until she came to live in Melbourne, where she soon swam and flourished in the arts community. She is flying now, doing all sorts of things with sustainable gardens, music, and placemaking. These are her parents who were amongst the first wave of Europeans to migrate to Australia after WW2 from Hungary. Dad Ziegy, I am sure has gypsy blood, with a passion for the violin. And mother Trixie knows how to live in the tradition of the Eastern Europeans in that beautiful civilized soiree kind of way celebrating the art of good conversation and hospitality. Happy Xmas Amadis and familigia. xxx
CAN’T GET ENOUGH
If there is one thing that I cannot get enough of at this time of the year (apart from Raspberries that is), it’s the blue of these gorgeous agapanthus. It’s that same intoxicating blue that you see in Jacaranda.
A Sweet Little Creek called the “Merri”
I live on the Merri Creek, and it is where I practise the Art of Walking every day. It is really a merry little creek, full of ducks, swans, geese, water hens, the odd rat, and many also where i pass some many merri doggy derringdooness out running so happy with sticks in their mouths.. The creek is arbored by lovely gum trees and willows, and some beautiful grasses, and also a magnificent old bluestone bridge that you pass underneath as you head north. I am so lucky to live on the Merri. If you want to find out more you can see pictures of it here: http://tumblr.com/ZPVFExAmpjP1
These are my personal merri creek xmas cards i have made this year which pertain to my personal space of the merri. They are my first foray into screen printing again after doing a screen printing course last year on FABRIC mind you.
There has to be an easier way though. You know the way things take 5 times longer than they should when you don’t know what you are doing:) first of all, I had to cut the stencils X 2 (1 for each of the 2 colours) when I kept having disasters with the stencil bleeding. I was using that plastic stuff called Mylar. The moral of the tale is this: If you want to print onto paper, Mylar = certain disaster.
Then the second issue was registration. It was near on impossible to align everything perfectly. Does ANYONE out there in reader land have any tips please oh please:)
And finally.. the clean up process has to take at least 6 times longer than the actual making.
Anyway, they do look cool, and I am going to make some sweet amaretti to give to people with them.. quite a lovely present to receive I think! I’m off to have a well earned ice-coffee and read some more fantastic Leanne Shapton (can’t get enough) Happy Xmas everyone…
PHOTO SHOOT FOR PRESS RELEASE
What do you think of my official photoshoot photos for the Kit for Uptight White People. Now Proudly stocked by Metropolis Books, Brunswick Bound, and Brunswick Street Bookstore. (see links below) for $16 a copy.
To be honest with you, its always stressful peddling your creations. You should be proud that you have come so far, and done something that is actually pretty good. Its up there. But no, that feeling of humility never does leave and you always feel slightly ridiculous. But you have to push on. Yesterday was an exhausting.. I bundled up my books in a bag, and drove around to six places with my books. One shop was closed, and another shop (Heidelberg Gallery, known for being very stuffy and difficult to deal with on many recounts) of course were too busy to see me. Another major bookseller Reading’s buyer Daniel was so busy, but still made a bit of time, and said he loved it but was so drowning in books to put out on the shelves, that it would get lost in his pile. Could I please return in the New Year. So that’s great.
The owner/buyer at Metropolis books http://www.metropolisbookshop.com.au/ is called Molly, and she is a lovely lady with a soft kind gentle face. One of those rare people who takes the time to listen carefully. I am really stoked that the Kit is in this shop, as it is the most beautiful bookshop ever. Full of really interesting titles.
Brunswick Bound http://www.brunswickbound.com.au/is a pretty awesome shop too, as is Brunswick Books: http://www.brunswickstreetbookstore.com/. If you ever come to Melbourne, I would say these 3 shops plus Readings and Perimeter Books are the ones to visit!
So I should be pleased really.
Then I emailed our famous blog here in Melbourne with the above photos included, and others that you are probably all familiar with. I posted a hard copy off to a magazine you might have heard of called Frankie.. will I hear back from them.. ? tick tick tick tick goes the minutes, days…… I hate this. But you have to do it.
If you would like to read the kit you can do so here:
